The Spanish wall and floor tile industry has a growing commitment towards sustainable development. Thanks to the creation of environment-friendly solutions, over the last decade it has focused its efforts on strengthening links with new ways of living and satisfying new construction requirements, as seen in the catalogues of the companies exhibiting at CERSAIE 2011 in proposals for ventilated façades or smart floors, which include home automation features.
This article explores some of the most important aesthetic trends presented by Spanish manufacturers: tiles inspired by nature, geometric motifs and mosaics are just some of the most outstanding new products appearing at this year’s event.
The colours of nature have inspired the new collections of Spanish ceramic tiles at CERSAIE 2011, combining the appearance of the most ecological materials with the high performance qualities of ceramics. Tiles inspired by wood are already a classic among wall and floor tile manufacturers, with light tones, grain or cherry colours as some of the very latest trends. Metal effect finishes are increasingly present in the new catalogues, and tiles inspired by metals such as copper, gold and steel are the highlights of the most up-to-date styles. We can also find ceramic wall and floor tiles inspired by stones and minerals, which contribute towards creating a classic, timeless beauty that never goes out of fashion.
In turn, geometric motifs provide a way of bringing a sense of balance to different settings, while breaking away from the monotony of plain surfaces. Here we find a number of styles, from tiles decorated with regular motifs, to geometries created by the contour of the tiles themselves, the layout pattern of the tiled surface and the joints.
Ceramic mosaics are another of the sector’s strong points this year, with compositions predominated by ochres and browns combined with a gentle palette of colours, together with more contrasting styles in black and white to create sharper settings.
The latest collections from Spanish manufacturers reinterpret ceramic tiles with new colours and motifs, based on classic settings inspired by stately homes, or with traditional brocade reminiscent of our childhood. We also find tiles with three-dimensional effects and relief surfaces, bringing a sense of originality and design to these new collections.
The colours feature more acidic, saturated tones alongside lighter palettes and pastel finishes. Another important highlight of the new collections from Spanish manufacturers at CERSAIE 2011 are printed motifs, from classic polka dots or stripes to prints with realistic images such as fruit or flowers.
A return to our roots is also proposed by spaces decorated with brocade and damask, covering the walls and floors of different rooms: from the kitchen, providing a traditional feel, through the bathroom, giving it an Arabic touch. The classics also return in another style: the stately home look, reminiscent of sumptuous mansions full of light and space.
Ceramic tiles with volume are another important feature from the Spanish sector at the international fair. This is a new, suggestive concept of space, redefining the three-dimensional factor by focusing on sensuality and the interplay of textures. The highlights and shadows created by these relief surfaces based on the light direction produce a wide range of colours depending on the time of day, creating truly dynamic settings.
Finally, other important areas for the Spanish companies appearing in CERSAIE 2011 are terraces, porches, patios and façades. The benefits of ceramic floor tiles, combined with an extensive range of motifs, finishes and sizes, also make this material ideal for outdoor use, with new collections using earth tones for a rustic appearance: ochres, greys and blues for more natural settings, or tiles with varying shades for a more artisanal look. In turn, ventilated façades using ceramic tiles improve the thermal qualities of buildings, protecting them from damp and helping to keep them cool in the summer months, without forfeiting anything in terms of appearance and design, and helping to collaborate towards the sustainability of the building.
